Honesty: The Artistic One
A fifth grader finds her passion for dancing and drawing.

Honesty’s nerves were about to get the best of her. Inside, she felt the pressure of things going wrong because she realizes that she did not have enough room to do her performance in her normal setting. She moves outside, the change of scenery seems daunting to the 10-year-old girl. She takes a deep breath as she takes the stage, where her dance will come to life.
The Maxfield fifth graders were participating in a school talent show Dec. 4. Each child got to perform their favorite talent for their classmates. Honesty’s love for dance brought her out of her shell, allowing her to openly express one of her many passions. Still, sharing this skill was nerve wracking and intimidating for the young girl. She did not want to mess up.
“When I went outside, [Ms. Gottschalk] told me I was the first person to perform,” fifth grader Honesty said. “Why am I nervous? I shouldn’t be nervous because I like to dance.”
Honesty not only adores dancing, but she also finds comfort in drawing. When she is stressed about homework, she often finds herself taking a break to draw. While she is creating, she is able to find an escape from the pressures of her world, like taking care of her younger siblings, especially during their online school days.
As one of seven siblings, she has strong family values. While visiting her cousin, Honesty enjoys being creative with her. They often visit a kind artist, Nikkie, who converts Honesty and her cousin’s drawings into beautiful paintings to sell.
“Nikkie likes to paint over it to add color to it, and we made a PowerPuff Girl,” Honesty said.
